CARACAS, Venezuela — An international human rights group is urging the government of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to protect an activist who has called attention to alleged rights violations in the country’s prisons. Human Rights Watch says Chavez’s government should comply with an order by the Costa Rica-based Inter-American Court of Human Rights that Venezuela shield Humberto Prado from potential attacks after the activist received numerous threats. Prado is the director of the Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons, and he angered officials by criticizing their handling of uprisings led by armed inmates at two prisons. Read full article >>
