House Republicans apparently failed to elect Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) for Speaker, with at three Republicans voting for someone other than Johnson. Members have been told there will be a second round of voting — though technically the first round vote is being held open. Johnson is in negotiations with Keith Self and Ralph Norman, both of whom he needs to be elected Speaker. There were nine Republican holdouts — who voted for someone else or initially abstained from voting — a signal to Johnson that there are enough to topple him under the new proposed House rules.
