Harris County Jail Cited For Inadequate Staffing

The citations were issued by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, which made a surprise inspection of the holding facilities early Monday beneath the courts buildings at 1201 Franklin and in an adjacent building at 1301 Franklin. Alan Bernstein, director of public affairs for Sheriff Adrian Garcia, said each day one-tenth of the county's 9,500 jail population are brought to holding cells to attend court proceedings. The sheriff was cited for having five jailers supervising 409 inmates in the holding cells Monday morning, fewer than the nine required by state jail regulations.
