The Gazette was honored with first place for overall coverage of education and 26 other honors at the annual Iowa Newspaper Foundation newspaper contest. Opinion Page Editor Jennifer Hemmingsen received first place for editorial writing, while the Meet the People campaign detailing Gazette staff was honored with first place for best marketing campaign.The awards were presented Friday at the annual banquet in Des Moines.Second place awards to The Gazette included: General Excellence; Best Feature Photo, Liz Martin; Best Sports Story, Erin Jordan; Best Series, Chelsea Keenan; Best Breaking News Story, Chelsea Keenan; Best Breaking News Photo, Jim Slosiarek; Best News Feature Story, Erin Jordan; Best Feature Page; Best Newspaper website; Best Newspaper Marketing.Third place awards included: Best Sports Section; Coverage of Government and Politics; Best Use of Social Media; Best Feature Photo, Stephen Mally; Best Slideshow, Stephen Mally; Best Photo Story, Rebecca Miller; Best Sports Columnist, Mike Hlas; Master Columnist, Todd Dorman; Best Series, Chelsea Keenan, Lee Hermiston, Molly Duffy and Rod Boshart for coverage of the opioid epidemic.The Gazette also won first place for best advertising featuring an appliance, and second place for adds for financial/insurance or other professional services.
