The crowds were bigger outside the courthouse this time, with about 200 co-workers, family members and friends of slain taxi driver Mohamed Kamal turning out for another appearance by the man accused of his murder. At the end of the hearing, senior Assistant State's Attorney James Bernardi announced to the courtroom that he would be happy to take questions about the case from anyone, and led the scores of Kamal supporters into a neighboring courtroom, where he talked to them for about 45 minutes. Earlier, in the court proceedings, Mekoshvili's lawyer, Lindy Urso, asked for 12 days to review the police reports and talk with his client to decide whether to request a probable cause hearing in the case, which would ask the court to determine whether the police had enough reason to arrest Mekoshvili on a murder charge. Every murder defendant is offered a probable cause hearing if they choose, but many don't request one, because whatever evidence is put on the record in the process at the hearing can be used at trial. Mekoshvili was arrested a week ago Wednesday, about 13 hours after Kamal's bloody body was discovered face down outside his cab, which had run off Doolittle Road into some trees during an apparent robbery early that same morning. After Kamal's body was discovered, a police dog tracked the suspect through a back yard on Doolittle and onto an office park property is on Long Ridge Road, approximately 2 miles away from Lord & Taylor.
