Longtime former Bangor High School boys basketball coach Roger Reed was among the honorees during Friday night’s Maine McDonald’s/Maine Association of Basketball Coaches’ banquet at the Anah Shrine Hall in Bangor. Reed, who coached at Bangor from 1985 to 2012 and led the Rams to eight Class A state championships, was presented with the MABC’s Bob Brown Contributor Award. Reed, whose basketball origins trace back to playing pickup games in Howard Millett’s barn in East Dixmont as a seventh-grader during the early 1950s, went on to a coaching career that began at Bangor Christian School from 1972 to 1979. He went on to coach at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, from 1979 to 1981 before returning to Bangor Christian, where he remained until taking over at Bangor High School. Reed is one of the winningest boys basketball coaches in state history with a career record of 571-201 — a .740 winning percentage — at Bangor Christian and Bangor, including a 457-103 mark at Bangor. He has spent the last seven years as an assistant coach under his son Mark at Hermon High School while serving in the Maine Legislature. Reed is a 2006 inductee into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame, a 2013 inductee into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, and a 2015 member of the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame. Three Maine McDonald’s Spirit of the Game Awards were presented to high school basketball team members who embody the spirit of the sport, exemplify sportsmanship, inspire teammates and coaches and have shown the ability to overcome obstacles and boundaries. The awards are named after two basketball team managers who were the first recipients of the award, the late Joshua Titus of Edward Little High School in Auburn and Patrick Thibodeau of Greely High School in Cumberland Center. Gabby Sherman of Old Town was honored in recognition of her determination and courage while battling brain cancer since age 13. The Old Town High School girls basketball team manager has since undergone five surgeries in addition to receiving chemotherapy treatments and attending school. Sherman attends every home basketball game to motivate the players, both on the bench and in the locker room. “Gabby always has a wise comment or joke to relax us.
