Fire Destroys Convoy Garage

CONVOY — No one was injured in a garage fire Tuesday night at a rural location north of Convoy and about five miles east of the Ohio-Indiana state line. The cause of the 5:02 p.m. fire at 6956 Pollock Road remains under investigation but started in the garage and just reached the wall of the house, said Convoy Fire Chief Gary Kreischer. The fire destroyed the breezeway and utility room and part of a wall to the main part of the house, but firefighters kept it from spreading into the house, which all are attached, Kreischer said. “We got it out before it destroyed the house,” he said. The couple who lived in the house with a young child were not home and were assisted by the American Red Cross to find another place to stay for the night, Kreischer said. Kreischer estimated damage at $75,000. Teresa Hirschy and Ronald Wells are listed as the owner with the Van Wert County Auditor’s Office. Three other agencies assisted from Ohio City, the City of Van Wert and the village of Scott fire departments, Kreischer said.
