The pain in his back, brought on by terminal pancreatic cancer, was becoming too intense for him to sleep. Dennis' daughter-in-law, Angie Griggs, filed a complaint on Aug. 8 with U.S. Rep. Randy Weber's office, contending that a Veterans Affairs Medical Clinic "refused" to rewrite and fill Dennis' prescriptions prescribed by his doctor at Texas Oncology-Beaumont. Angie Griggs' complaint joins a vast collection of others submitted on behalf of veterans who claim they cannot obtain pain medication through the VA, according to a story by the Austin American-Statesman. The VA tightened its practices after the newspaper's 2012 investigation revealed that one in three of 345 Texas veteran deaths reviewed by journalists were caused by a drug overdose.
