The Austin American-Statesman (http://atxne.ws/1yn4Ruc ) reports McWilliams, who turns 73 next month, announced Friday he is retiring this August after his family "tried to give the best we have to Texas, and certainly Texas has always given us the best it had," he said in a statement. [...] McWilliams became the Longhorns' head coach in 1987 and guided the 1990 squad to the Southwest Conference title as the Horns went on an electric "Shock the Nation" tour. After the 1991 season, he moved into an administrative capacity and has served as an associate athletics director with the T-Association, which caters to former letter winners. Texas officials announced that Jill Sterkel will lead the T-Association during the transition until McWilliams' official retirement at the end of August. "Coach McWilliams has demonstrated the loyalty, pride, and tradition of Texas athletics during his time as a player, a coach and an administrator," athletic director Steve Patterson said. Women's athletic director Chris Plonsky, who has known McWilliams for years, said, "Through both his athletic talents and personality, David has helped build the Texas Longhorns family, and his legacy will continue here long after his retirement."
