A record-breaking number of El Paso County residents cast their ballots in Tuesday's primary election, according to county officials. As of about 2 p.m. on Monday, the county Clerk and Recorder's Office had received ballots from 92,251 of its roughly 390,000 active registered voters. Of the ballots returned, 22,883 were from Democrats, 49,071 were from Republicans and 20,297 were from unaffiliated voters. Officials are attributing the "all-time high" number of county voters who have cast ballots in the primary to a new statewide policy that allows unaffiliated voters to participate in the primary election for the first time, said Kristi Alfonso, a spokeswoman for the Clerk and Recorder's Office.
