Stories Related to El Paso County Residents Having Difficulty Navigating Recycling Rules

The blue or the brown bin? That's the choice many Colorado Springs residents face when discarding their waste. The rules on what to toss in the blue, or recycling bin, versus the brown trash bin can seem arbitrary - paper egg cartoons can be put in recycling, but Styrofoam must go to the landfill; plastic milk jugs go in the blue bin, while pill bottles should be chucked in the trash. But they're crucial to minimizing the impact of landfills and litter, especially in El Paso County, where residents recylce only about 12 percent of their refuse. "People didn't want five bins to sort for recycling, so we made single stream," said Alicia Archibald head of safety and recycling education at Bestway Disposal.
