They grew up as professionals together in the same positional group and remained together through two coaching changes and more offensive coordinator alterations. After one season under coach Mike McDaniel and his offense, though, Smythe was deemed to fit as the capable blocker while Gesicki, a talented pass-catcher lacking blocking ability, was not.
