Wall Street has been rocked in recent weeks by dramatic swings in trading, but corporate America has stood firm, with senior executives making few revisions in the plans they had drawn up for expansion and hiring. But anxiety in the executive suites is running so high that it wouldn’t take much bad economic news to make busi­nesses rethink, according to interviews and a review of more than three dozen recent conference calls executives held with financial analysts. The grim report Friday on unemployment could be just the thing that prompts executives to pull the trigger and ditch their plans for investment and hiring — perhaps dealing a fateful blow to the stalling U.S.
