Donald Trump sells himself as a man’s man. When Trump projects old-fashioned male power full of aggression and swagger, he gratifies his culturally conservative base, both men and women. Democratic politicians, by contrast, rarely discuss masculinity. That might seem obvious for a party which, heading into the 2018 midterm elections, was seeking a “ year of the woman.” During an election that took place exactly 50 years ago, however, ideas about manhood played a central role for the Democrats.
