A long-closed trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is inching toward a possible reopening.Superintendent Craig Kenkel told the Akron Roundtable on Thursday that he had news about the Old Carriage Trail in northern Summit County that has been closed for six years because of three unsafe trail bridges that have rusted away. The park has been told it will get federal funds in 2016 to design a replacement structure for at least one of the pedestrian-only bridges in Sagamore Hills Township, he said. The park is “on the road to rehabilitate that trail,” said a pleased Kenkel. It is not known how much money will be provided by the National Park Service for that work, said park spokeswoman Mary Pat Doorley.Additional funds will still be needed to design the other bridges and to replace the bridges, she said.Kenkel is continuing to push for federal funds for that work, although he is also looking for other funding sources, she said.Repairing or replacing the bridges could cost $1.5 million, according to earlier estimates. The bridges were closed in late 2009.
