Wanda Knox Jones

ROGERSVILLE - Wanda Knox Jones, age 79, of Rogersville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 22, 2019, in the comfort of her home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Nancy Reeves Knox. 
Wanda was a member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church and spent 30 years as a dedicated employee of Dodge. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and loved by many.
Survivors include her loving husband of 60 years, J.R.

 

Sullivan East senior sees history through National History Academy

BLUFF CITY  — This summer Sullivan East High School senior John Martin Harbaugh got to see places and items he studied in Advanced Placement U.S. history his junior year first hand, from the nation’s capital to battlefields, from the blockades at historic Willliamsburg to the National Archives.
He also got to shake hands with late President George Washington, or at least a reasonable facsimile dressed in period clothing, and meet actor Robert Duval.

 

Thomas Walker volleyball hoping to join Eastside, Cove atop Cumberland

Eastside and Rye Cove are again the frontrunners in Cumberland District volleyball, but Thomas Walker made some noise last year and is expected to challenge again.
Here’s a look at the teams around the Cumberland District heading into the volleyball season.

Balance is the name of the game for the Lady Spartans after finishing 17-9 last season.
“I have 12 very athletic girls,” said Eastside coach Brianne Bailey said. “All 12 have talent. We just got to get out there and play.

 

Defensive fronts to be challenged in Boone-South opener

KINGSPORT — Daniel Boone is committed to the run, and Sullivan South plans to lean on its offensive line.
It sounds like the front seven of each team’s defense will be tested for four quarters.
The Trailblazers and Rebels renew their close-community rivalry Friday night at 7:30 in the season opener for both teams at Matherly Stadium in Kingsport.
Also opening up is David Crockett, which plays host to Class 6A foe Ooltewah.

North coach likes county-rival opener

Preston Patrick said he likes the idea of opening the football season against a county rival.
“It causes the kids to focus on preparation, and it’s non-conference so it doesn’t have the same pressure out of the gate,” said the Sullivan North coach.
Patrick’s Raiders will travel to Blountville on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against tSullivan Central’s Cougars in the season opener for both teams.

Earl Wayne Wallen, 56, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019.
A service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Shades of Grace United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM

Workforce Solutions at Northeast State offers Lean Leadership workshop series

BLOUNTVILLE — The Workforce Solutions team at Northeast State Community College presents the Lean Leadership system training course this fall. The course features eight workshop sessions beginning Sept. 27 and continuing through Nov. 22. All class sessions will meet at Wayne G. Basler Library, Room L226, on the Blountville campus.
Each workshop is $300 per person. The workshops can be taken individually.
Lean is a systematic approach to eliminating waste and creating flow within an organization to improve overall customer value.

 

Hal Lynn Hunt

Hal Lynn Hunt, age 69, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, August 22, 2019 following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born to the late Vernon and Laura (Bishop) Hunt on March 22, 1950. He was a dedicated employee of AGC from where he retired. Hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends were his favorite past times. Above all, he loved the Lord. Through his example, we learn to truly appreciate God’s creation and to cherish life. He was a member of Slate Hill Primitive Baptist Church.

 

Charles Leonard

KINGSPORT - Charlie C. Leonard, 79, Kingsport, has gone to play on that All Star Team in Heaven.
The family will receive friends from 3-5:00 pm on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Rock Springs United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life Service will follow with Pastor Ronnie Ledford and Rev. Carole Martin officiating.

Sheila Rose Morris

BIG STONE GAP, VA - Sheila Rose Morris went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 23, 2019, at Hospice House in Bristol, TN.  She was born in Kingsport, TN on March 1, 1938.  She worked at Tri-City Airport Commission for many years.  She resided in Big Stone Gap, VA with her beloved husband, Charlie Morris.  She was a member of East Stone Gap Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School for many years.  Her grandchildren and great grandchildren we
