The reign of terror by serial killer David Berkowitz, a.k.a. "Son of Sam," ended with his arrest by the NYPD 40 years ago on Aug. 10, 1977. From the summer of 1976 to the summer of 1977, David Berkowitz terrorized New York City. The 'Son of Sam' went on a spree in which it is believed he killed six people and wounded seven others. Armed with a .44-caliber handgun, this killer stalked young women parked with their boyfriends in the city's lovers' lanes. He taunted police with notes sent to then-Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin, and with each the tension grew.
