Firms vie to design new Augusta arena

Four architectural firms interviewed with a committee Monday to develop a plan for a new arena in downtown Augusta, although the facility’s location and funding source remain undetermined.
Reprentatives from Rosser In­ter­na­tional, Stadium Consultants In­ter­national, AECOM and Sink Combs Deth­lefs each presented examples of their work and showed how they would develop plans for a new arena, including ways to win public support for the project that Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority has budgeted at $110 million.

 

Mayor's signature item moves to full commission

Plans to remove the mayor’s signature line from a document he’s declined to sign move forward today.
Augusta’s Administrative Services committee approved eliminating the line last week after Mayor Hardie Davis said he would not sign the document, a policy change approved in June requiring commission approval before the city law department drafts new ordinances or code amendments.
City General Counsel Andrew MacKenzie said Davis’ signature wasn’t needed on the document.

 

One hospitalized after I-20 wreck

One person was hospitalized Monday afternoon following a single-car wreck on Interstate 20.
About 5 p.m., deputies responded to mile marker 1, where a Ford Mustang overturned in the median. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, one person was transported to AU Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.
No lanes were blocked, according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern.

 

Grovetown woman claims fake sex ad posted on Craigslist

A Grovetown woman contacted police Thursday after learning someone had falsely posted on Craigslist that she was soliciting sex.
The woman, 26, told Columbia County sheriff’s deputies she woke to find her phone filled with text messages from strangers. The texts stated they saw her ad on Cragislist and wanted to see if she was available. Some of the strangers had also sent inappropriate photos.

Paine College gets injunction

Paine College will remain accredited and on probation after reaching an agreement with its accrediting body after the college filed a lawsuit Monday morning alleging improprieties by a staff member to the committee that heard its appeal, attorneys said Monday afternoon.
Paine and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission agreed to the injunction, which will allow time for the parties to work on issues, the attorneys said,

Two Columbia County juveniles claim "clown" harrassment on social media

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was contacted on two occasions in the past week by juveniles who claimed they were harassed by clowns on social media.
A mother told police her daughter had received several messages on Instagram from people dressed as clowns and the messages were continuing. A deputy saw requests from three or four subjects to follow on the girl’s page. All of the subjects were dressed as clowns and stated where they wanted to meet her.

A 43-year-old man is facing charges after deputies say he posed as an Evans High substitute teacher to get food and take school athletic uniforms.

Paine files federal lawsuit to stop losing appeal

Paine College filed a federal lawsuit seeking an emergency injunction to restore its accreditation after the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges Friday rejected its appeal of a denial of its accreditation.

Gas shortages popping up

 
 
ATLANTA — As some Georgia gas stations reported their fuel supplies had dried up, a pipeline company working to repair a break in Alabama said Monday it has worked “around the clock” to limit disruptions to the region’s gas supply.
Gov. Nathan Deal today issued an executive order reiterating state law  prohibits price gouging.

Pardon our Mess: Furniture mess after eviction

WHAT: Furniture and other belongings strewn by vandals across a yard and sidewalk after a Sept. 8 eviction
WHERE: 1810 Greene St.
WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: If not immediately retrieved by the tenant after an eviction, removed items become the responsibility of the landlord, according to Lt. Terry Norman of the Richmond County Marshal’s Office.
