Man wanted on drug charges leads deputies on chase

 
A man wanted on methamphetamine-related charges led Richmond County deputies on a chase Tuesday afternoon.
According to Sgt. Monica Belser, a deputy attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Jacob Craven, 22, of Beech Island, about 1 p.m. on Interstate 20 at Washington Road. Officials said Craven led police on a chase that ended in Aiken County, but additional details are not available. At one point during the incident, an officer deployed his stun gun.

Elementary teacher accused of slapping pupil reassigned to different school

A former Sue Reynolds Elementary teacher has been reassigned to another elementary school after being accused of slapping a third-grade pupil on Aug. 18.
Kaden Jacobs, director of communications and community engagement for Richmond County schools, confirmed Tuesday that the teacher was disciplined for his actions but would not state what the punishment entailed.
“It’s a personnel matter,” Jacobs wrote in text message. “I’m not going to get into how (the teacher) was disciplined.”

 

Service station bandit sought

 
Police are seeking a man who robbed an Olive Road service station this morning.
Deputies were called to Pak-N-Go, 1649 Olive Road, after the unknown man, who was dressed in a hoodie with a green handkerchief over his face, robbed the store. He was last seen running toward the rear of the store.

Aiken Tech sets career workshops

Aiken Tech hopes to help current and prospective students explore career paths during a series of Career Exploration Workshops.
The workshops will be held 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22, Oct. 20 and Dec. 8 and are free to prospective and current students.
Officials said the workshops, which will be put on by the college’s Career Services department, will help students decided on a career path that’s in line with their personal goals and will take into account their personalities, interests and values.

 

Traffic alert for Columbia Road

Columbia Road commuters are advised roadwork might slow their travel this week.
According to a news release from the Georgia Department of Transportation, starting Wednesday, a Columbia County Water Utilities contractor will begin lowering water valve boxes and sewer manhole covers along Columbia Road, closing various lanes.
The work begins at Belair Road and continues east to Washington Road into next week.
The county expects the utility adjustments lasting until Sept. 30 depending on weather.

 

Burke County moves up two spots in latest prep football poll

Despite having a week off, voters are noticing Burke County’s hot start and have rewarded the Bears in the latest Georgia Sports Writers Association High School Football Poll released Tuesday.
Burke County moved up two spots to No. 7 in the Class AAAA poll. The Bears are 4-0 with dominating wins over Washington County and Lakeside in their past two games. They have a tough test in Effingham County on Friday.

NEW YORK — Brangelina is no more. Angelina Jolie Pitt has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, bringing an end to one of the world’s most star-studded, tabloid-generating romances.
 
An attorney for Jolie Pitt, Robert Offer, said Tuesday that she has filed for the dissolution of the marriage. Offer said the decision was made “for the health of the family.”
 
The couple has six children together: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne.
 

 

CIA chief to speak in Augusta

CIA Director John Brennan will speak in Augusta next month to a cybersecurity summit planned by Augusta University.

Brennan will be one of the keynote speakers at the program, which will bring together government, academia and industry experts to provide intelligence and the latest updates on how to improve cybersecurity, education and research, according to news release.

Gas pipeline restart set Wednesday

ATLANTA — A main gas line is expected to restart Wednesday with a temporary bypass after a leak and spill in Alabama led to surging fuel prices and some gas shortages across the South, a company official said today.

The roughly 500-foot (152- meter) section of pipe that will serve as the bypass is now complete, and the company expects that will allow it to restart the main gasoline line, Colonial Pipeline spokesman Steve Baker told The Associated Press.
