Augusta woman arrested on charge of operating personal care home without license

An Augusta woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a charge of operating an unlicensed personal care home in the Sand Hills neighborhood.
Brenda Lee Nations, 57, was charged with the misdemeanor offense of operating an unlicensed personal care home at 2571 Mount Auburn St.
According to a Richmond County sheriff’s incident report, Shannon Vincent of the state’s Department of Community Health contacted law enforcement about Nations. Vincent had twice cited Nations for operating without a license at the Mount Auburn Street home.

 

New member selected for juvenile court judgeship

A new member for the juvenile court bench in the Augusta Judicial Circuit has been selected.
The eight members of the Superior Court bench selected Amanda Heath to become the newest juvenile court judge for the circuit which includes Richmond, Columbia and Burke counties.
Heath served as an assistant district attorney and practiced law as a private attorney since graduating from the law school at Mercer University and being admitted to the bar in December 2010.

 

Vacant home vandalized with paint

Police are investigating threatening messages sprayed on a vacant home off of Peach Orchard Road.
A maintenance employee for the company managing the property contacted police Tuesday morning after discovering the damage at the home on the 2700 block of Smith Drive.

A pizza delivery man said he was robbed of $70 worth of food at an apartment complex.

Coble reaches semifinals at Senior Amateur

Augusta’s Laura Coble won her quarterfinal match today at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur.
Coble defeated Kim Eaton, 3 and 2, this morning at Wellesley Country Club in Massachusetts. Coble won four of the first eight holes to build a big lead and only lost one hole to Eaton.
Coble takes on Ellen Port of St. Louis in a semifinal match this afternoon.

 

Richmond County man reported missing

Officials are seeking help in their search for a missing man.
Bobby Gaiter, 36, was last seen about 9:30 a.m. today on Amber Drive in the Butler Creek Mobile Home Park. He was wearing khaki shorts, a white tank top and carrying a tan bed sheet.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 821-1020 or 821-1080.

 

Body found in July identified

A decomposing body found in a Wilder Street home in July has been identified, but his cause of death remains undetermined.
A pre-demolition crew discovered the body at 1539 Wilder St. on July 22. Coroner’s office officials said that judging by the clothes the man had been there since winter. His body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy and an examination by a forensic anthropologist.

Road closings set for Ironman race

Several roads will be closed this weekend for the Ironman 70.3 Augusta.
The 70.3-mile triathlon will begin at 7:30 a.m. Sunday with a 1.2-mile swim from the Augusta Riverwalk Marina to The Boathouse Community Center on Riverfront Drive. From there, the athletes will shift to the 56-mile cycling leg into South Carolina.
The cycling leg will wind through Aiken County, passing through Jackson and New Ellenton on the route. The cyclists will return to the transition area at The Boathouse to begin the 13.1-mile run leg of the race.

 

Aiken County sheriff's office investigating 'suspicious' death

Aiken County officials are investigating a “suspicious” death of a man found in a pickup truck this morning.
According to a sheriff’s office news release, deputies responded to the 100 block of Rushton Road about 2 a.m. for a suspicious vehicle. An unidentified black man was dead in the back of the truck.
More details on the case have not been released as police and the coroner’s office continue to investigate the incident.

 

1 dead, 1 hospitalized in southside fire

A young female is dead and another person is hospitalized after a residential fire this morning in south Augusta.
Coroner Mark Bowen at the scene at 3003 Tallwood Way near Lumpkin Road said when firefighters arrived just before 6 a.m., a side of the house was fully ablaze.
