Voter rolls growing ahead of November presidential election

 
Area voter registration numbers are surging ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential election.
Columbia County has 99,214 registered voters as of Sept. 19, while Richmond County has 98,484, according to elections officials in both counties.

 

South Aiken-Aiken rivalry is Game of the Week

One of the most intriguing rivalries in the area returns to region play Friday night as both programs are off to positive starts.
When South Aiken visits Aiken at Hagood Stadium at 7:30 p.m., The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week will have region implications for the first time since 2013. The matchup kicks off the Region 4-AAAA slate for both teams.

Shoplifting theft suspect sought

 
Police are asking the public’s help in identifying a man suspected in a shoplifting incident.
According to a bulletin from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, a young man entered Hobbytown USA, 266 Bobby Jones Expressway, at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 16, placed an undisclosed item worth $1,300 in a bag and left without paying.

A portion of Broad Street will be closed for the next month while crews make repairs to a bridge near King Mill.
The bridge, which is expected to be closed to traffic Tuesday, is one of several undergoing upgrades in the downtown area. The Archibald W. Butt Memorial Bridge on 15th Street closed last month for crews to begin an upgrade project, which will include a complete deck repair, the addition of bike lanes and the restoration of some of its historical elements.

Columbia County man arrested for exposing himself

A 44-year-old man is facing charges after exposing himself to another driver Saturday morning.
Jeffrey Steven Stallings was booked into the Columbia County Detention Center Sunday morning on a charge of public indecency - third or subsequent conviction.
According to a Columbia County sheriff’s incident report, police initiated a traffic stop on Stallings’ vehicle on Belair Road at Interstate 20 after the 32-year-old woman reported the incident.

 

Greenbrier Elementary student admits gun threat

A Greenbrier Elementary student admitted to school officials last week that he threatened to bring a gun to school.
According to a Columbia County sheriff’s incident report, a parent contacted police after hearing the child had exposed his genitals to other students and threatened to bring a gun to school. Police made contact with the witnesses, who stated they did not see the student expose his genitals but they did hear the threat.

 

McCormick prison inmate killed in fight

MCCORMICK, S.C. — An inmate has been killed at one of the state’s high security prisons.

South Carolina Department of Corrections spokesman Dexter Lee tells The State the male prisoner was killed Sunday during a fight with another inmate at McCormick Correctional Institution in McCormick. The man hasn’t been identified pending notification of family.

The incident triggered a lockdown of the prison.

Authorities haven’t released details like how the inmate was killed.

 

Salvation Army requesting towels

The Salvation Army is in need of towels for the hundreds of showers being taken in the shelter each week.
According to the Salvation Army, about 120 people take showers in the Center of Hope shelter each day. That equals to more than 840 showers a week. Towels and washcloths wear out quickly, and the current supply is very low. According to a news release, the purchase of new towels would put a strain on an already tight budget as the shelter prepares for its busiest time of the year.
