Police investigating gas station robbery

Police are investigating the robbery of a Peach Orchard Road gas station early Thursday.
According to a Richmond County sheriff’s incident report, a man in a mask went into Circle K, 2822 Peach Orchard Road, about 2:15 a.m. and demanded cash. The clerk told police she gave him $40 from the cash drawer before he left, taking her cell phone with him.
The clerk told police she did not see a weapon and the bandit gave no indication that he had one.

 

Man charged with exploiting the elderly

A “handyman” is facing charges for exploiting a 92-year-old Augusta woman.
Police were first called to the woman’s Murphy Street home on Aug. 16 after her daughter realized she had written more than 25 checks to Ronald Clayton Newman, 58, who worked as a handyman. According to an incident report, the woman does not recall writing the checks, but the bank confirmed that the signature on the checks matched the one on file. Her daughter told police she believes Newman took advantage of her mother by having her continually write checks.

 

Sheriff, mayor hold solidarity walk

On a recent drive to work, Richard Roundtree turned onto Laney Walker Boulevard and immediately noticed a patrol car behind him.
Roundtree – the Sheriff of Richmond County – slowed and crept almost two miles before arriving at his office on Walton Way.

Fort Gordon gets new command sergeant major

Fort Gordon’s new garrison command sergeant major said he hopes to create more unity between the fort and the surrounding communities as the Army base continues to expand and grow.
“We are one community,” CSM Charlie Bryant Jr. said Thursday morning immediately after taking over the reins from outgoing CSM Marcus Campbell. “We want to embrace everyone as one family.”

ACC moves championship game to Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Atlantic Coast Conference is moving its 2016 football championship to Orlando’s Camping World Stadium.
The conference made the announcement about the Dec. 3 game Thursday.
Orlando emerged as a possible location after the ACC joined other sports leagues in pulling out of North Carolina amid backlash over controversial state House Bill 2.

Graves Mountain plans mineral dig

Graves Mountain plans mineral dig
Graves Mountain, a former mine known for its rare minerals, will be open to the public Oct. 7-9 for the semiannual Rock, Swap & Dig event, in which visitors can chisel away at rock outcrops in search of minerals.
The mine will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Although admission is free, donations to offset the cost of the event are accepted, said Clarence “Junior” Norman, the caretaker of the Lincoln County, Ga., site.

 

Augusta document storage a growing problem

 
Augusta has a document problem – currently about 9,600 boxes of them.
The city’s aging, landlocked Records Retention building on Fifth Street is currently “at capacity,” its 8,700 square feet packed from floor to ceiling with approximately 26,000 boxes of records, Central Services Director Takiyah Douse told Augusta Commission members.

AU paycheck changes ease and add to employee burden

Because they deal with residents who work crazy hours at Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, Debbie Langston and Laurel Jones also must work crazy hours. That could become a problem because they will soon have to clock in, even though they should be exempt from new federal rules.
And they could end up losing vacation time they can’t take because of it.
“It’s just going to be a nightmare,” Langston said.

 

Augusta homicide suspect's statement admissible as evidence

If the case against a suspect in the killing of a South Carolina surgeon in Augusta in 2013 goes to trial, the jury will be able to listen and watch the video recording of his police statement.
At the conclusion of a hearing Wednesday in Richmond County Superior Court, Judge James G. Blanchard Jr. ruled the videotaped statement was legally obtained, freely given and is admissible as evidence during Glenn V. Riggs II’ trial.
