Winter Haven city manager under fire

City Commissioner William Twyford wanted to fire City Manager Deric Feacher at Monday night’s meeting, but a vote will have to wait. City Attorney John Murphy said that to take action on any item of substance requires a published item on the agenda. It would also take a 4-1 vote to fire Feacher. The vote was pushed back to Sept. 12.

 

Recent rise in gas prices could be short

Consumers gassing up in Winter Haven and Lakeland on Monday agreed on one thing: They're perplexed. “I don't understand how it goes down one or two pennies a week, but when it goes up, it's 20 cents,” said Montie Noble, 68, of Alturas, who was filling the tank for $2.18 a gallon at the Murphy Express station at 801 Third St. SW in Winter Haven. “There should be a regulation it goes up as slow as it goes down. It's got us trapped.”

The Polk County School Board lost a lawsuit against Polk County that it had hoped would give it the power to hold a special election for its half-cent sales tax referendum.

 

Motorcyclist dies in collision with pickup

A Lakeland man died after his motorcycle collided with a pickup about 7 a.m. today on Walt Williams Road, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
