CODOGNO, Italy – Italy scrambled Sunday to check the spread of Europe's first major outbreak of the new viral disease amid rapidly rising numbers of infections and a third death, calling off the popular Venice Carnival, scrapping major league soccer matches in the stricken area and shuttering theaters, including Milan's legendary La Scala.

Concern was also on the rise in neighboring Austria, which halted all rail traffic to and from Italy for several hours after suspicion that a train at its southern border with Italy had two passengers possibly infected

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea on Monday reported 161 more cases of a new virus that has spread rapidly around a southwestern city, bringing the nation's total to 763 cases a day after the president called for “unprecedented, powerful” steps to combat the outbreak.

Two more deaths were confirmed, raising South Korea's death toll to seven from the COVID-19 illness, which is caused by a newly identified coronavirus that has infected tens of thousands of people, mostly in China.

CHICAGO – Supporters of the revitalization of Chicago’s historic Pullman neighborhood say they have the money for more restoration work, five years after then-President Barack Obama designated part of the area as a national monument.

Longtime supporters gathered with National Park Service officials Wednesday on the Far South Side to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the monument designation as leaders unveiled the latest renderings for a more than $56 million revitalization project.

Embattled Mettawa Mayor Casey Urlacher resigns from Illinois Civil Service Commission

Mettawa Mayor Casey Urlacher resigned from his post on the Illinois Civil Service Commission on Friday, a day after federal prosecutors named him as one of 10 defendants indicted in connection with an illegal sports betting ring.

Jordan Abudayyeh, press secretary to Gov. JB Pritzker, confirmed the resignation Sunday.

Urlacher, 40, was appointed to the commission in 2013 by then Gov. Pat Quinn.

Harvard man dead after crashing into pole

A 24 year-old Harvard man was reported dead on scene after a pickup truck crashed into a pole Sunday morning in unincorporated Harvard, causing power outages for the area, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Walworth County Sheriff’s deputies, and Harvard Fire Protection District Personnel responded to the scene of a single vehicle traffic crash at 6:32 a.m.

 

Winter storm watch in effect for DeKalb, McHenry, Kane counties, six inches of snow possible

Just when you think the warm, sunny weather is here to last, the National Weather Service reports it expects six inches of snow this week.

That snow is part of a storm system expected over the next few days, with temperatures in the upper 30s Monday dropping to the upper 20s by Wednesday.

DeKalb, McHenry and Kane counties are under a winter storm watch in effect from 9 a.m.

 

Wonder Lake Fire Protection District asking for tax levy increase in referendum

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District is asking voters to approve a referendum March 17 election ballot increasing its property tax levy.

An average homeowner with a $100,000 home currently pays $153 in taxes to the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District. If the referendum is successful, that would go up by $33, so the homeowner would pay $186.

The amount of taxes currently able to be levied for the fire district is $963,994.
