More than 'civility' at stakeMr. Schostak's column in the July 8 Oakland Press might best be defined as "chutzpadik." He characterizes the actions of Franklin Hills Country Club as based simply on political affiliation. Yet he is well aware that the meaning went far deeper. Yes, the Club was founded in the '20s by Jews who could not join other clubs (think DAC and Oakland Hills).

Dream TeamSINGLES•Donovan Nguyen, senior, Utica: The Dream Team MVP went undefeated in all four years of league competition. All-State honors as a senior. Battled an injury all season, and was forced to play left-handed during a league match because the team needed him. He ended up winning that match.

 

Chesterfield police investigating brazen beer theft

Police are seeking information from the public about a theft that allegedly occurred at the Chesterfield Township Meijer store on May 1.At 6 p.m. a white male entered the store at 23 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue and selected two cases of Bud Light beer, Chesterfield Township police said. He proceeded past all points of purchase and made no attempt to pay for the merchandise.

 

Young hero honored with proclamation in Warren

Three-year-old Savannah Lavely smiles while being honored Tuesday for actions she took last month that helped save her mother's life. The Warren girl received a proclamation from Mayor James Fouts as her proud parents, Steven and Jessa Lavely, looked on, On June 16, Savannah and her mom were walking with their dog in their neighborhood when the woman collapsed from a seizure.

Sterling Heights man accused of dragging daughter from SUV in Hazel Park

A Sterling Heights man is accused of injuring his toddler daughter and her mother when he backed his SUV with an open rear door out of the mother's driveway, causing the child to fall out in her car seat and be briefly dragged recently.The suspect, Michael P. Kaler, 29, is free on $100,000 bond in the July 7 incident, which police said happened at the mother's house on West Maxlow Street.

 

Prosecutor: Warren man repaid aunt, uncle by killing them

Judge James Biernat Jr. tried to penetrate the personality armor of a man who killed the aunt and uncle who raised him. He found minimal success.Biernat questioned convicted murderer Joseph Borowiak Tuesday at his life-without-parole sentencing for killing Steven and Cynthia Collins, 67 and 66 respectively, in their Warren home Sept.

 

Cash for life winning lottery ticket sold in Macomb County

A winning Michigan Lottery ticket worth $25,000 a year for life was sold at a tobacco shop in Warren, lottery officials announced Tuesday.The winning Lucky For Life game ticket in the Monday, July 16 drawing was purchased at Tina's Tobacco Outlet of Warren, 4230 10 Mile Road. The five white balls drawn Monday night - 14-17-18-21-48 - marked the 22nd time that a Michigan winner has won a lifetime prize in the Lucky For Life game.

 

Pollinator Palooza returns to Edsel and Eleanor Ford House Aug. 4

Bees, birds, bugs and butterflies will come fluttering to the Pollinator Palooza at Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 4."Ford House is proud to set an example of environmental stewardship, and one of the many ways we do so is taking care of Michigan's at-risk pollinators," said Gretchen Abrams, Ford House education programs coordinator.
