2 robbery suspects were ‘camo-ed up’

Law enforcement in Lancaster and the county are investigating two convenience store robberies by unidentified suspects well concealed in camouflage gear.
The first incident happened the night of March 8 at 903 Discount Beverage, 720 Chesterfield Ave. in Lancaster. The most recent robbery happened early Friday morning at Jack’s Highway 9 Party Shop, 2190 Pageland Highway West.
No shots were fired in either robbery, and no one was injured.

 

Old county potter’s field finally getting historical marker

A long-neglected piece of Lancaster’s past near the intersection of S.C. 9 and Old Dixie Road is getting its due.
A historical marker that shows the location of the “County Home/Poor House” cemetery will be dedicated at 3 p.m. Sunday.
And this is one marker that’s a long time coming, said Jessica Blackmon.

 

Cigarette suspected in massive SCCL fire

Low humidity, gusty winds and one discarded, still-lit cigarette combined to kindle the massive blaze that destroyed three homes Thursday in Sun City Carolina Lakes.
“I’ve seen cigarettes start a fire in grass, but never in 40-mph winds,” said Lancaster County Fire Rescue Director Darren Player.
Player noted that interviews and an initial investigation led county Fire Marshal Russell Rogers to come to that conclusion.
A Sun City resident, he said, told investigators that he was smoking on a porch deck.

 

Tuesday program explores ‘Activism of Native Women’

From Native American activism in the Dakota Access Pipeline movement to the exploration of symbolism in contemporary artwork, four female panelists will discuss their roles in modern Native movements during the “Activism of Native Women” symposium this Tuesday.
The symposium, 2-4 p.m. at USC Lancaster’s Bundy Auditorium, is part of the Native American Studies Center’s 13th-annual Native American Studies Week.

Suspicious behavior leads to Indian Land drug arrest

A Charlotte teen was arrested in Indian Land for trafficking cocaine and possession of marijuana with intent to sell after a curious deputy followed a hunch and tailed the teen’s car.
Justice Blake Mendler, 19, was arrested March 5 in an incident that began shortly before midnight at the Indian Land McDonald’s.

 

Rep. Norrell: Make ‘revenge porn’ illegal

Rep. Mandy Powers Norrell has introduced legislation to make revenge porn a crime in South Carolina, targeting the latest form of online harassment and breach of privacy.
The Lancaster Democrat’s bill in the S.C. House would make the crime a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or as much as a year in prison.
