ROCK HILL – Rep. Ralph Norman announced Monday that he will be seeking a new term in the U.S.

 

Filings begin for ’18 political races

The official election season has begun, with several candidates already planning to seek office in the June party primaries.
“These non-presidential election years are normally a little slower, but it’s not been that way here,” said Lancaster County Elections Director Mary Ann Hudson.
“This office has been pretty busy with the upcoming Indian Land incorporation on March 27, as well as the filings.”
This year, the offices of governor, members of Congress, the S.C. House and other statewide and local offices are up for election.

 

Homecoming with a purpose

Don Dixon is coming home again. This time, in addition to providing an evening of music, he and his wife, Marti Jones, will be helping fund repairs and security improvements at the Old Presbyterian Church cemetery.

 

TLN wins 31 awards from SCPA

SPARTANBURG – The Lancaster News won 31 awards at the S.C. Press Association’s annual meeting Saturday, including first place for general excellence.
TLN’s three sister papers combined for another 47 awards, with The (Chester) News & Reporter taking home its first President’s Cup and Editor Travis Jenkins named Journalist of the Year.
Jenkins, the ceremony’s biggest winner, received his third-straight Freedom of Information Award. The audience rose in a long standing ovation in his honor.

 

Kershaw moves to cut swim team cost

KERSHAW – And the two swim teams shall become one.
The Kershaw Stingrays will merge with the Lancaster Piranhas on a one-summer trial basis for the upcoming competitive youth swim team season.
“We’re trying it and in talking with parents, if they don’t like it, we can always go back to being a Kershaw team,” said town council member Jody Connell.

 

AJ cleanup expands: 6 weeks, $3M

Andrew Jackson Middle School’s plan for a two-week, $1 million fire cleanup has ballooned into perhaps six weeks and $3 million.
“The latest date we’ll reopen is the Monday after spring break, April 16,” Superintendent Jonathan Phipps said. “Of course challenges could arise that we can’t foresee, but we’re confident we can open by then.”

Abuse case against local dad dismissed

Child-abuse charges against a Lancaster father have been dismissed and expunged, and court documents say state investigators found the allegations “unfounded.”
Randy Lorenzo McIlwain of 1446 Winthrop Ave. was charged on April 27, 2017, with three misdemeanor counts of cruelty/depravation to children. His children, who were 7, 12 and 15 at the time of the allegation, were taken into emergency protective custody.

 

Block party to address youth violence

More than once, LaVern Shropshire reminded her sons that poor choices might one day lead to unintended consequences.
And that day was Dec. 4, 2015, when her sons – Naquavis Aqueece Benson, 29, and Jarvis Mandrell Benson, 38, along with a friend, 30-year-old Jarvarius Deshawn McGee, were shot to death in a triple homicide at a home near Pineville.
