Double fatality north of Madras

Two people were killed and one injured Friday evening in a traffic crash north of Madras, according to Oregon State Police.The two-vehicle crash occurred a few miles outside Madras on U. S. Highway 97 at around 5:30 p. m. The preliminary investigation suggests a line of vehicles were attempting to pass a commercial truck.

 

Tuber rescued from river

A man who became wedged between two rocks while inner tubing on the Deschutes River was rescued Friday afternoon by Redmond Fire & Rescue and Deschutes County Search & Rescue.Duncan Girard, 34, of Redmond, was tubing with Troy Monroe, 48 and also of Redmond, when Girard fell off his tube where the river passes through the Odin Falls Ranch subdivision north of Redmond.

 

Fire forces Kah-Nee-Ta lodge to close

A blaze that started Thursday in a kitchen area at a Kah-Nee-Ta Resort & Spa has caused extensive fire and water damage and has forced the closure of the main lodge for a few days, according to the resort and fire officials.More than 350 people were evacuated Thursday from the resort on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation and moved to other hotels. Authorities said they were never in danger. The only reported injury was a cook who suffered second-degree arm burns after he grabbed a fire extinguisher and tried to put out a grease fire that may have started the blaze.

Deschutes DA rules Shepard shooting “lawful and justified"

A Deschutes County sheriff's deputy was justified July 2 in fatally shooting an armed, 54-year-old woman during a confrontation outside her apartment west of Redmond, District Attorney Patrick Flaherty ruled today.Deputy Michael Sundberg fired on Cindy Shepard as she advanced on two other deputies, a shotgun in her hands, “in the firing position," according to a report by Flaherty.

Fire precautions in effect

Fire managers will impose Industrial Fire Precaution Level II restrictions for the Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests, Crooked River National Grassland, and Prineville District of the Bureau of Land Management at midnight Sunday, according to the U. S. Forest Service on Thursday.Under Level II restrictions, the following activities may only take place in the affected areas between 8 p.m.

Therapy table death lawsuit

A family’s lawsuit says a 64-year-old Deschutes County man died after he was stuck upside down for a “prolonged period" in an inversion therapy table marketed as a way to relieve back pain, improve joint health and build muscle tone.The lawsuit says Gary Lee Price, of Bend, couldn’t get the device to return to the upright position and couldn’t remove himself from it.
