Lower Deschutes reopened, but fires continue to burn

Authorities reopened a portion of the Lower Deschutes River Tuesday evening but the Sunnyside Turnoff Fire continues to burn on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation.The fire is one of two in Central Oregon that have threatened homes and forced authorities to evacuate hundreds and close nearby roads.

 

La Pine man jailed for arson in Stagecoach Fire

A La Pine man is accused of intentionally starting a wildfire Monday south of La Pine that prompted the evacuation of 120 homes.Kelly Jera Parker, 30, is being held today on $100,000 bail at the Klamath County Jail in Klamath Falls, said a deputy at the jail.

Names released in Friday’s fatal crash

Oregon State Police have identified the two men killed Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle head-on crash north of Madras.According to police, 91-year-old Warren Chester Ward, of Chula Vista, Calif., tried to pass a commercial truck traveling southbound on U. S. Highway 97 seven miles north of Madras on Friday. Ward, driving a rented Subaru, collided head-on with a Ford Explorer driven by Harold M.

 

Bend man injured in bicycle accident

A Bend man was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when he fell from his bike near Tumalo State Park.The man, whom deputies declined to identify pending notification of his family, was riding his road bike toward town on O. B. Riley Road shortly after 3 p. m. when he crashed, said Sgt.

 

Paraglider crash hurts Springfield man

The crash of a fan-propelled paraglider Sunday morning on Santiam Pass seriously injured a Springfield man.James Carter, 55, had just lifted off around 10:15 a. m. in the powered aircraft, based on a modified parachute, when he lost power and fell 100 feet to the ground, according to the Oregon State Police.

 

Hay barn burns in Crook County

Crook County Fire & Rescue crews were sent to a barn fire on Northwest Lone Pine Road around 8:30 p. m. Saturday.When crews arrived, the hay barn was fully involved.

 

Warm Springs fire makes run toward Deschutes River

A wildfire on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation continued to grow today, charging toward the Deschutes River as more firefighters arrived in Central Oregon.“We just hear a report that the fire is making a run," Carol Connolly, spokeswoman for the Northwest Coordination Center in Portland, said this afternoon.

 

Bicyclist in Sunday crash dies of injuries

A bike rider whose shoes jammed the front wheel of his bike near Tumalo State Park died Monday at St. Charles Bend of injuries sustained from the crash, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.Robert Vern Huskey, 67, of Bend was riding Sunday afternoon on O. B. Riley Road when a pair of shoes attached to his bike came loose and stuck between the front wheel and fork. Huskey was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend with serious injuries.
