In preparation for its third annual “SMART Art: Show, Sale, Social" in September, Start Making A Reader Today, or SMART, invites the public to make a difference in the community from 3 to 5:30 p. m. Thursday in the Brooks Room of the Bend Public Library, 601 N. W. Bond St.Those who attend the free event can learn more about becoming a SMART volunteer in local schools and create book-inspired art to be displayed at the SMART Art fundraiser in the fall.

The KIDS Center in Bend recently announced that its first “Cork & Barrel" wine event series raised more than $200,000.Spotlighting Walla Walla, Wash., wines and regional cuisine, the event was held July 13 at the Tetherow Golf Club in Bend.

The City of Bend is seeking applicants for an open seat on the Planning Commission. The commission reviews land-use issues and makes recommendations to the City Council. The City Council will decide whom to appoint to the position. The deadline to turn in an application is 5 p. m. Aug. 9. Road crews in August will be filling ruts on U. S. Highway 97 between Bend and Redmond to improve safety, according to Peter Murphy with the Oregon Department of Transportation.“The ruts in the road really do affect the drive," he said.

A small number of CenturyLink customers in the Awbrey Butte area of Bend were temporarily without land line phone service due to a cut cable.Heather Koch, spokeswoman with CenturyLink, said a third party accidentally severed the cable near Newport Avenue between Third and Fourth streets on Thursday afternoon.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office has concluded the dog “Chance" was injured as the result of it jumping out a vehicle window while the vehicle was moving, not dragged behind.No criminal citations have been issued, according to a news release.The dog was found injured Monday on Smith Rock Road in Terrebonne. A deputy told The Bulletin on Wednesday the Sheriff’s Office had a report the dog was dragged behind a vehicle.

The fire on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation grew northeast by “a couple thousand acres" Thursday, according to Bill Queen, an Oregon Incident Management Team Four spokesman.The fire, called the Sunnyside Turnoff Fire, is moving toward a small cluster of houses on the Deschutes known as Dant, northeast of the Mutton Mountains.

Bend La-Pine Schools announced Thursday that they have hired Jay Etnier as assistant principal of Summit High School.Etnier currently works as a teacher and department chair at Sam Barlow High School in Gresham.
