Hospital awards nonprofit grants

St. Charles Health System has awarded about $50,000 to 10 Central Oregon nonprofit organizations whose missions involve improving communities’ health and well-being.The largest award, $10,000, went to the Bethlehem Inn in Bend, which provides critical housing services for adults and children.

Report: Wildfire smoke is health risk for millions

LOS ANGELES — Wildfire smoke poses a growing health risk to millions of Americans, even for those who live hundreds of miles from the flames, a new report by an environmental group says.About two-thirds of Americans, or nearly 212 million people, lived in counties that two years ago contended with wildfire smoke linked to respiratory problems such as asthma, pneumonia and chronic lung diseases, according to a report released by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Some to repay jobless benefits

Federal employees who received unemployment benefits resulting from the government shutdown will have to repay the money, due to a change in policy, the Oregon Employment Department announced Friday.The U. S. Department of Labor told Oregon employment officials earlier this month that federal workers would be eligible for unemployment benefits during the partial-government shutdown.
