Volunteering for infection in hunt for dengue, Zika vaccines

WASHINGTON — Forget mosquito bites. Volunteers let researchers inject them with the dengue virus in the name of science — and an experimental vaccine protected them. Next up, scientists plan to use this same strategy against dengue’s cousin, the Zika virus.

 

Landfill bids come up dead even

Savannah city officials plan to revise their purchasing options in case lightning strikes twice at City Hall.
The planned revisions come after the city received matching six-digit bids from two vendors, leaving the City Council divided Tuesday on how to proceed.
Republic Services of Georgia and Waste Management of Georgia submitted the sole bids to provide landfill services for de-watered sewage sludge. Both bids totaled $601,875.
No instances of similar ties could be recalled by staff or veteran council members, and a 5-4 council vote ensued.
