Savannah pair indicted in 2015 gang-related murder

Two Savannah men on Wednesday were indicted for murder and related charges in the 2015 slaying of James Pastures in what prosecutors contend was a gang-related slaying.
Shacqeal Sanders, 22, and Henry Speaks, 24, caused the death of Pastures by shooting him, the Chatham County grand jury said in returning a malice-murder count.
Pastures, 34, was shot and killed Jan. 19, 2015, in front of an apartment in the 1900 block of East 51st Street.

 

Brussels mourns, Belgium on alert as police hunt suspect

BRUSSELS — Belgians began three days of mourning Wednesday for the victims of the Brussels airport and subway bombings, and the country remained on high alert as authorities hunted for one of the suspected attackers seen on surveillance video with two others who blew themselves up.

 

Suspicious package prompts evacuations at Atlanta airport

ATLANTA — Atlanta police say passengers were evacuated from a terminal at Atlanta's airport but are now being allowed back in after a bomb squad investigated a suspicious package.Atlanta police Officer D.T. Hannah said the package "has been cleared" and the areas are being reopened.Hannah said in an email that the package was found in the airport's South domestic terminal Wednesday morning.The airport said in a statement on its official Twitter account that the evacuation was done "out of an abundance of caution."

Savannah City Council to consider hiring firm to find new city manager

A firm recommended by former Savannah and Chatham County administrative heads is set to present a plan to the City Council on Friday for finding a new city manager, and a vote on whether to approve the search contract may follow, according to officials.
During the special meeting, Daytona, Fla.-based Colin Baenzinger & Associates will discuss the methods it would use to find a replacement for outgoing City Manager Stephanie Cutter, said Alderman Van Johnson.

 

Pipeline moratorium approved, awaits governor's signature

ATLANTA – The House beat back an amendment to weaken a pipeline moratorium bill late Tuesday night and sent the measure to the governor for his signature.
By a vote of 116-48, House Bill 1036 passed to prohibit the state from issuing any permits or licenses until July, 2017, for the construction of a petroleum pipeline. It is aimed at Texas-based Kinder Morgan which has plans to build the $1-billion Palmetto Pipeline across East Georgia linking Belton, S.C., and Jacksonville, Fla., with a terminal near Savannah.
