TYRONE - The press of a button sounded a whistle Thursday morning outside American Eagle Paper Mills, symbolizing the installation of new technology and a move toward the futur.

The Altoona Area School Board unanimously approved a contract with the district's teachers effective Sept. 1 through Aug. 15, 2020.
"It was overwhelmingly a yes vote (from the teachers)," union President Doug Rosenberry sai.

There was laughter in the moments just before a 19-year-old Altoona teenager pulled the trigger on a loaded .357 revolver and killed a friend, 19-year-old William Callan Jr., according to criminal charges filed Thursday by Altoona police.

Patricia Rommel Shuster, mother of Rep. Bill Shuster, R-9th District, and the wife of former congressman Bud Shuster, died Wednesday, according to an obituary.
Shuster, of Everett, was 84. She died after a brief period in hospice care.

Among all votes cast Wednesday by five City Council members to adopt five planning ordinances that were recodified for ease of use, the only "no" vote was Mayor Matt Pacifico's - for an ordinance concerning stormwater.
