Rob Fong says the task force isn't in charge.Sacramento City Councilman Rob Fong wants the council to discuss taking a stand - and possibly enact economic sanctions - against Arizona in the wake of that state's new immigration law. Fong on Tuesday night ask for the topic to be put on the council agenda, saying, "I just think it's something we should be taking a strong look at here in the city of Sacramento to see if we were willing to take some sort of a position. "I think it's a terrible thing when we start to single people out because they look different, whether they're citizens or not." Fong today said the city should consider sanctions and that the new law "elevated racial profiling to an art form." Arizona's new law requires immigrants to carry documents confirming their immigration status and the police to question suspects about their immigration status if they believe a person is in the country illegally. Last week, Mayor Kevin Johnson called for sanctions against Arizona, but he later reversed that stance after the Phoenix mayor told him such actions would hurt that city's already-battered economy. Today Johnson applauded a move by the Phoenix Suns -- the NBA team he once starred for -- to wear jerseys with the team name "Los Suns" during a playoff game the previous night.
