By Rod Guajardo Daily Journal TUPELO – The City Council gave a green light Tuesday evening for Tupelo to purchase a new $1 million transformer to replace a unit that blew up earlier this month. On June 6, a transformer at the city’s southwest substation on Cliff Gookin Boulevard caught fire and left the western part of Tupelo without power for two hours. The transformer takes 161,000 volts from the transmission lines and steps it down to 46,000 volts to send to substations.
