Congress passes $38 billion in budget cuts

The deal for the remainder of the 2011 fiscal year, which left House Republicans divided, is not the end of the debate. A vote on a GOP spending blueprint for 2012 is planned for as early as Friday.Congress approved a $38-billion spending cut package Thursday, sealing a deal to prevent a government shutdown before plunging into an even more far-reaching debate over spending on federal programs and benefits for the years to come.
