Book review: “I Was Told to Come Alone” shows one woman’s grit and determination while reporting on terrorism

Henry Holt and Co.I Was told to Come Alone by Souad Mekhennet In case anyone needs more evidence that journalists provide an essential public service, spend some time with Souad Mekhennet’s 2017 memoir, “I Was Told to Come Alone: Behind the Lines of Jihad.” Mekhennet, a Muslim woman born in Germany, goes where few journalists are willing (or able) to travel, crossing Europe, North Africa and the Mideast, through Syria and Turkey, to track and eventually uncover the identity of ISIS executioner Jihadi John. Along the way, she gets at the heart of radical Islam’s campaign to brainwash and recruit teenage boys, especially in the Mideast, and turn them into killers. A reader can’t help but be impressed by her grit and determination while reporting on terrorism for publications like The Washington Post and the New York Times — even when getting the story seems too dangerous. “I was told to come alone,” she writes.
