SCHENECTADY - Mayor Gary McCarthy extended the state of emergency in the area around Sunday's mudslide so engineers can conduct a broad examination of the soil in the area near where the hillside gave way.Engineers are going to take subsurface soil samples to determine if there are other weak spots in the land near where the soil crumbled over Nott Terrace, leaving a man hospitalized and forcing the city to level two homes on nearby Barney Street.
