Donor began helping E.J. as boy

It's been more than three decades since a 6-year-old Matthew Matheny was photographed for the newspaper paper digging rolls of coins out of a brown paper sack to donate to The Beaumont Enterprise's Empty Stocking Fund. Even after moving away for college and starting a family, the Beaumont attorney - now 39 - has carried on the annual tradition of donating to E.J., the charity's pajama-clad toddler mascot. Back in 1984, the sandy-haired, grinning Matheny gave $7.40 in change to help ensure local children had toys under their Christmas trees. "We would save the (coins) up all year long and keep them in a chest my father had," Matheny said.
