'I've never done anything': Legislation filed to eliminate Chatham County surveyor post

In the nearly three decades that Bert Barrett Jr. has held the post of county surveyor, he can recall exactly one time he was asked to do some county surveying. It was 1988 — the year he took up the position — and the county manager hired him to do some work on Isle of Hope for $250. In the time since, Barrett says, he’s done absolutely nothing as county surveyor — apart from qualifying for the position every four years.
