Colorado Springs Powwow Gives 'heartbeat' To Native American Culture

The heartbeat of the drums could be felt throughout the room on Saturday as dozens danced to the beat to share ancient traditions with their young children and hundreds of strangers. Raul Figueroa, who grew up on the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana, was one of many men's northern traditional dancers who performed in the Grand Entry of the 7th annual Colorado Springs Native American Intertribal Festival and Traditional Powwow, held at the Mortgage Solutions Financial Expo Center. Figueroa lives in Pueblo, and living in a city so far from the reservation makes it harder to expose his children to Sioux traditions without making a specific point to do so.
