A year after stealing his best friend's revolver and using it to execute him and his mother in their Colorado Springs kitchen - apparently without provocation - a 20-year-old man again resorted to the unexpected. He admitted it in court. Elijah Tyre Colon of Colorado Springs pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 70 years in prison in the May 2017 killings of Christopher Peppers, 20, and Barbara Peppers, 53. The hastily arranged plea bargain, which averted a lengthy trial set for July, materialized after two weeks of negotiations that left prosecutors stunned by Colon's about-face after he previously asserted his innocence.
