Hillary Clinton has weighed in about the issue of addiction, promising to proactively address opioid use and abuse if elected. Mayors from across the state have signed a letter announcing support of Clinton’s plan to combat substance use disorders and fight addiction in their community. According to the Clinton campaign, over 3,000 drug-related overdose deaths in Pennsylvania occurred in 2015, a 23 percent increase from the previous year. Clinton’s plan includes a $10 billion dollar comprehensive plan to tackle America’s substance use epidemic. It includes a federal-state level partnership to incentivize the creation of local programs to address the issue by matching $4 for every $1 spent by state governments. According to the campaign, the plan would empower communities to implement preventive programming for adolescents, ensure that first responders have access to naloxone and prioritize rehabilitation and treatment over prison for low-level offenders. Local mayors who have signed the letter include Scranton mayor William Courtright and Dunmore mayor Patrick Loughney. .neFileBlock { margin-bottom: 20px; } .neFileBlock p { margin: 0px 0px 0px 0px; } .neFileBlock .neFile { border-bottom: 1px dotted #aaa; padding-bottom: 5px; padding-top: 10px; } .neFileBlock .neCaption { font-size: 85%; } Clinton http://timesleader.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/web1_Clinton_Mug2-cmyk.jpgClinton By Times Leader staff
