Taking on a musical rarely performed in high schools, Crystal Lake South looks to entice crowds to “Catch Me If You Can.” The musical is based on the 2002 film of the same name featuring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Stephen Spielberg. That film was based on the memoir of Frank Abignale, Jr., who performed cons worth millions of dollars before his 19th birthday during the 1960s. “There are the same familiar threads from the story people remember in the film,” Director Ben Stoner said of the upcoming Crystal Lake South production. A 1960s-era jazzy musical score created by the musical artists behind “Hairspray” accompanies the theater production, with the school’s orchestra performing for the first time on stage behind the set, he said. The production provides a unique draw in that the title’s known, but the musical really isn’t, Stoner said.
