Worried about the Great Salt Lake and birds that rely on it, the Audubon Society is getting more politically active in Utah

One of the nation’s preeminent environmental organizations is setting up shop in Salt Lake City after authoring a report that indicates the Great Salt Lake is only half its natural size.
Earlier this month, the National Audubon Society released its finding regarding the health of saline lakes in the western United States.

 

Utah forecast: Temperatures return to triple-digits

After a short break from triple-digit temperatures, the high is expected to reach 101 degrees in the Salt Lake Valley on Saturday.
After sun in the morning, central Utah and the Wasatch Mountains may see isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, with highs around 80 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

A man is dead after a motorcyclist and a pickup truck crashed in Lindon on Friday morning.
The motorcyclist, 29-year-old Brian Scott Hansen, of Pleasant Grove, was headed south on State Street and crashed into a pickup truck that turned left onto State Street from 550 North, said Lindon Police Chief Josh Adams. Venezuelan prosecutor requests conditional release for imprisoned Utah man

Venezuela’s chief prosecutor requested a conditional release for a Utah man and his wife, who have been detained in the country for more than a year.
If a judge approves the request, Josh Holt and Thamara Candelo would be on house arrest in Venezuela, awaiting a trial, according to Holt’s lawyer, Carlos Trujillo.
“We are very hopeful for this new development, and we look forward to this actually taking place,” Trujillo said, relaying a statement from Holt’s family.

West Jordan bans aerial fireworks after July 4 fires burned through resources

After several fires burned throughout the state on July 4, the West Jordan City Council voted Friday evening to ban aerial fireworks on Pioneer Day.
The City Council approved the ban with a vote of 4-2, according to city spokeswoman Kim Wells. Cottonwood Heights enacted a similar ban on July 12. Councilman David Newton voted against the ban, as did Councilman Chris McConnehey, who proposed that the ban extend through Sept. 30. Utah law prohibits aerial fireworks between July 27 and Sept. 30.
