UDOT worker in serious condition after Summit County semi crash

A Utah Department of Transportation employee was in serious condition Thursday after a semi-trailer smashed into his truck on the shoulder of Interstate 80 in Summit County, authorities said.
Morgan McCarthey, a UDOT station supervisor, was in serious condition but was expected to survive after the 11 a.m. collision at the Jeremy Ranch exit, department spokesman John Gleason said.

Senate Judiciary approves Huber as U.S. attorney for Utah

Washington • The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday advanced the nomination of John Huber to continue as the U.S. attorney for Utah, a position where he has served since 2015.
Huber had resigned as the state’s top federal prosecutor in March — as requested of 46 U.S. attorneys nationwide by Attorney General Jeff Sessions — and has been serving as the acting attorney general in the interim.

 

Police unsure what led to teenage girl being shot through door in Garfield County

Investigators are unsure what led a boy to allegedly shoot his sister through a door Sunday evening at their home in the small southern Utah town of Henrieville.
The 15-year-old girl was shot in the back and is “doing as OK as can be expected,” Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins said Wednesday.
She was taken by medical helicopter to a Salt Lake City hospital.

 

West Desert smolders as new lightning-caused wildfires ignite

Thunderstorms bearing little rain but lots of lightning sparked several new fires in Tooele County’s Cedar Mountains, even as crews closed containment lines around other West Desert blazes on Thursday.
The Onaqui Mountain Complex fires had scorched nearly 38,000 acres of brush, grass and high chaparral east of Dugway since first reported on Sunday. Fire Information Officer Shayne Ward said the fires were 75 percent contained, with full containment expected no later than Saturday.

Bountiful doctor arrested on child porn-related allegations

A Bountiful obstetrician-gynecologist was arrested and booked into Davis County jail on multiple charges related to child pornography.
Nathan Ward, 55, of Bountiful, was arrested Wednesday night by Davis County sheriff’s deputies and jailed on suspicion of seven second-degree felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Spanish Fork police investigating auto-ped accident that killed young boy

Spanish Fork police are investigating an auto-pedestrian fatality that took the life of a 3-year-old boy, but initial indications are that it was a tragic accident.
The boy reportedly was riding a scooter about 3 p.m. Wednesday, came around a corner and into the path of a car backing out of a driveway near 1000 East and 1400 South.
The child, whose identity was not immediately released, was in very critical condition when rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

Layton firefighters battle two brush fires, one intentionally set; teen arrested

Police arrested a 16-year-old boy for setting one of two brush fires that erupted within eight minutes of each other in Layton Wednesday afternoon.
Layton City Fire Marshal Doug Bitton said the first fire, blamed on a commercial lawn mower, was reported at 3:09 p.m. in a fenced area outside the eastern gate of Hill Air Force Base. The 2-acre blaze spread onto Layton city property before HAFB and Layton firefighters doused it.
The second fire erupted at 3:17 p.m.
