Nearly half of patients who go to urgent care clinics seeking treatment for a flu, cold or other conditions that don’t require antibiotics received a prescription for one anyway. That’s three times as often as antibiotics are prescribed to patients with the same illnesses in traditional doctors’ offices, according to a study published Monday.

HELSINKI — President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed Monday that the two leaders discussed Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, although the Russian leader denied that his government tried to sabotage the election and Trump offered little pushback to the autocrat’s claims.
Trump called the U.S. investigation of the interference “a disaster for our country.”

 

Bruce Poliquin has big lead in campaign cash over Democrat Jared Golden

Heading into the general election, Republican U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin has at least one big advantage over his Democratic challenger: money.
Poliquin, who is seeking a third term in Maine’s hardscrabble 2nd District, reported $2.7 million in cash-on-hand at the end of June compared to $357,000 for Jared Golden, who won a three-way Democratic primary last month for the right to serve as his party’s standard bearer.

 

Rescuers use helicopter to get hiker with broken ankle off Bigelow Mountain

WYMAN TOWNSHIP — A hiker from London, England, who broke her ankle was rescued early Friday by emergency responders from West Peak of Bigelow Mountain.
It was a joint rescue effort from several agencies to reach injured hiker Jennifer Custer, 38, atop Bigelow Mountain, according to a release from Sgt. Scott Thrasher of the Maine Warden Service.
West Peak has an elevation of 4,145 feet.

The Amazon.com founder’s net worth broke $150 billion in New York on Monday morning, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. That’s about $55 billion more than Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates, the world’s second-richest person.

 

FCC chairman has ‘serious concerns’ about Sinclair-Tribune merger, could seek to block deal

WASHINGTON — Sinclair Broadcasting’s proposed $3.9 billion acquisition of Tribune Media has raised “serious concerns” at the Federal Communications Commission about the amount of control the combined company would have over the U.S. television market, said Ajit Pai, the agency’s chairman.
Pai said Monday that he intends to send key parts of the deal to review by an administrative law judge, which is typically the first step the FCC takes when it seeks to block a deal.

 

Auburn man accused of fatally stabbing Lewiston woman had killed his wife in 1979

Maine State Police have arrested a 76-year-old Auburn man in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman in downtown Lewiston Sunday morning.
Albert Flick was arrested and charged with murder upon his release from Central Maine Medical Center Monday. He had been treated at the hospital for chest pains following the assault on Kimberly Dobbie, 48, in front of her 11-year-old twin boys.

 

Maine’s congressional members criticize Trump for casting doubt about Russia’s role in election meddling

Members of Maine’s congressional delegation criticized President Trump on Monday after his much-anticipated summit with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during which Trump again downplayed Russia’s role in interfering with the 2016 election.
Appearing side-by-side at a press conference following their closed two-hour meeting, Trump and Putin both cast doubt on what virtually all intelligence agencies have agreed upon — that Russia meddled in the election that saw Trump defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton more than 18 months ago.
