Police: Man locked child in chicken coop

A Wayne City, Illinois man accused of locking his girlfriend's 3-year-old son in a chicken coop for punishment has been arrested on a charge of domestic battery.

 

Kentucky clerk again refuses to grant license

William Smith Jr. and James Yates strode Thursday morning into their county clerk's office for their third attempt to get a marriage license. The office of Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis once again denied them, despite an order from a federal appeals court issued hours earlier that upheld a judge's directive to issue the licenses.

The Ferdinand Folk Festival has always aimed to be a free and family-friendly event. A series of fundraisers help make that a reality each year, the most recent coming up this weekend with a performance from a critically-acclaimed country artist whose father is a Country Music Hall of Famer.

 

Family history day at African American Museum

The African American History Museum's third annual Family History Day aims to help the community look into its own genealogy and experience new cultures. This year's event — taking place from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Saturday on the museum lawn — will focus on Afro-Latin culture through a series of arts and crafts activities. Family History Day is free and open to the public and food and refreshments will be provided.

 

Family bond sparks idea for dance class

Katelin Schoenbaechler gathered her dance students and formed a circle on the floor of a studio at the Center for Dance Education to begin their stretches. Stretching is an important element for any dancer, but particularly for Schoenbaechler's students — all of them have either a physical, cognitive or developmental disability that makes doing or understanding dance movements more difficult.

City government decision-makers remain far apart on how to handle the 2016 budget, with City Council Vice President John Friend calling for major cuts and Mayor Lloyd Winnecke's administration saying such a view is overblown.

A Shoals, Indiana, man was arrested Wednesday after a string of events led Indiana State Police and the Martin County Sheriff's Department officers to believe he was a suspect a double slaying Tuesday in Dover Hill, north of Shoals.
