Police: Armed man fatally shot after threatening family at Texas restaurant

A man is dead Wednesday night after attempting to rob a another man and his family at a South Side restaurant, police said. San Antonio Police Department Captain Michael Starnes said a father was eating with his family when the man approached him at about 8:30 p.m. in the restaurant in the 800 block of Southeast Military Drive. “He was threatened by the robber, who was displaying a gun,” Starnes said. SAPD Sgt. Roy Miller said the armed man asked the father for money.

A Beaumont man convicted of the 2014 murder of a Vidor 16-year-old will be tried again, after the Court of Criminal Appeals denied a request from prosecutors to review the case.

Port Neches-Groves ISD officials and parents are bracing for the results of a student's meningitis test, which could force the removal of students without required immunizations from school. Texas requires students to be vaccinated against diseases including meningitis, polio and measles before entering any public or private school, but exemptions are allowed for medical reasons or "reasons of conscience," including religious beliefs. Parents can submit a signed affidavit opting out of immunizations, which covers the student for two years.

 

Kountze students commit to leading charge against bullying, violence

Six Kountze eighth-graders, wearing football jerseys over dress clothes and seated at a table in front of a red-and-white Lions banner, each picked up a pen and signed the sheet of paper in front of them, signing their commitments, just as they would at a ceremony for athletic scholarships.
The students - five boys and one girl - flanked by teachers and parents,
participated in a mock signing day Wednesday to kick off a program called "Coaching Boys into Men" that will start this spring. The students will lead their peers in discussions about violence against women, harassment and bullying.
